Another month has passed so quickly and
here I am with an update on what's
happening on the 63rd Infantry Division
Association Web site.
I hope you were kind to your mother on
Mother's Day and gave her the attention and
recognition she deserved.

NATIONAL WORLD WAR II
MEMORIAL
Yes the National World War II Memorial is
going to be built, someday. Even though the
memorial has been subjected to 22 public
meetings, resulting in five approvals each
from the Commission of Fine Arts and
National Capital Planning Commission, an
endorsement from the State Historic
Preservation Officer of The District of
Columbia and four endorsements from the D
C Historic Preservation Review Board, there
is still some doubt as to its final location and
the date it will finally get underway.
This doubt has been caused mainly by a
small group of opponents to the Memorial
and its presently approved site.
Hearings are again scheduled to decide the
design and location of the National World
War II Memorial. These hearings are
scheduled for the 13th and 14th of June
2001.
I was asked to appear before the National
Capital Planning Commission during these
hearings, but declined since the position of
the 63rd Infantry Division Association was
made known last year when the membership
approved a proclamation to be sent to the
planning commission to support the present
design and location. I have made sure that
both the Planning Commission and the
National WWII Memorial organization have
copies of the 63rd Infantry Division
Association Proclamation as well as the
signatures attached thereto. Although the
originals were mailed to the principals last
year, I know that the WWII Memorial
Office couldn't locate a copy, so I FAXd a
copy to them.
What can you do??. Well you can write a
letter to the NCPC , as I am doing today,
urging them to ratify its previous approvals.
Such letters can be sent by e-mail to
info@ncpc.gov or you can mail them to:
Richard L. Friedman, Chairman, National
Captial Planning Commission, 401 9th Street
NW, North Lobby, Suite 500, Washington,
D C 20576.
Of the 16 million men and women who
served in uniform during the war, the VA
estimates that only 5 million are alive today
and we lose more than 1000 per day.
Further delay of the memorial will result in
additional thousands of World War II
Americans not being alive to see this
memorial to the "Greatest Generation".
Please take the time to support the current
approved design and site for the National
World War II Memorial.
