Issue Number 51                                  April 2012
All information in this Newsletter is developed by Fred Clinton, Webmaster, 63rd Infantry Division  and does not necessarily reflect the
views of other individuals and is in no way an Official Publication of the 63rd Infantry Division or 63rd Infantry Division Association.
Hello to all.  One would think that once
you get into retirement it will be just lazing
around and having a beer now and then.
But, that is not the case.  I have so much
new stuff on my plate that I need to serve
it to you all before I get overwhelmed.
So I am sending this Newsletter to bring
you up to speed on a number of things
that may be of interest to you all.

MORNING REPORT SCANNING
PROJECT:
As I mentioned in the last newsletter I am
scanning all of the non-combat months
morning reports from the division's
activation in June 1943 until the end of
September 1945 when the division was
deactivated.
That is a pile of paper and involves
thousands of scans and further
processing to make them as legible as
possible.
While there are still some missing unit
morning reports, for the most part when I
am finished we will have a detailed history
of what went on in the division and who
did it.
I only have about  4 more months to scan
and the project will be completed.

Award of the Bronze Star Medal for
Meritorious Service based on the
receipt of the Combat Infantryman or
Combat Medical Badge.

An old subject, but one worthy of
mentioning again.  There is still time for
veterans and or their families if the
veteran is deceased to apply for the
Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious service
based on earning the Combat Infantryman
or Combat Medical Badge during WWII.

A number have been awarded to our
veterans during the past few years  and
the regulation is still applicable.

Details for making application for award of the
Bronze Star Medal can be found at
www.63rdinfdiv.com/bulletinboardpage2.html

If you need assistance in obtaining
necessary documentation to support your
application please contact me at

2012 Annual reunion of the 63rd
Infantry Division Association.

As stated previously the 63rd Infantry
Division Association has decided not to
hold any additional National Reunions due
to limited turnout and inability of many of
our members to travel.

In place of the National Reunion a
decision was made to hold the annual
Board of Directors meetings at one of the
mini-reunions held by our area chapters.
This year the IMOK chapter will host a
reunion to meet our annual Board of
Directors Meeting requirement and they
are welcoming all 63rd Association
Members .

Details for this meeting can be found on
the Reunions Page.
AWARD OF THE PURPLE HEART FOR
COLD WEATHER INJURIES.

In late March 2012 I made an inquiry to
the US Army Awards Branch concerning
award of the Purple Heart to veterans
who suffered severe cold weather injuries
during WWII (Frostbitten and frozen feet
and hands).

Surprisingly I got a really quick reply from
that branch advising me that veterans of
WWII and the Korean War who suffered
severe cold weather injuries are now
authorized the award of the Purple Heart.

Details for qualifying for that award can be found
on Page 3 of the Bulletin Board Section at
www.63rdinfdiv.com/bulletinboardpage3.html

If you think you qualify for the award of
the Purple Heart due to severe cold
weather injuries while engage in combat
and do not have proper documentation,
contact me at joyclint@comcast.net and I
will see if I can find necessary qualifying
documentation in our files.

Award of the French Legion of Honor.

It is not too late to apply for the award of
the French Legion of Honor.  A number
of our veterans, including myself, have
done so and have received that
recognition from the French Government.

Details for making application can be found at
www.63rdinfdiv.com/LegionofHonorpage1.html

Again contact me at
joyclint@comcast.net if you need
assistance making your application.

Don't wait too long because the award
will not be made posthumously .

Historical files of the 63rd Infantry
Division can be accessed on the
Internet at the Fold3 Site.

A few months ago I sent copies of all of
our historical files to an historical archive
organization so that they could place
them in a special section dedicated to
military files .   That company was Fold3,
an organization related to Ancestry.com.

Within the past week I have been
notified that some of the files now appear
on their site and can be access free of
charge.  All of the files have not as yet
been posted since they are still trying to
develop the best format to use for this
type of record.  It is hope that our
records will be the catalyst for other
military organizations to share their files
with Fold3 and thus with individuals
wishing to view such files.

By placing our files on the Internet, Fold3
has helped us to insure that our stories,
photos, records, etc will not die with us,
but will continue to live on for others to
see and enjoy.

The files thus far posted can be viewed at
http://www.fold3.com/title_796/63rd_infantry_division_records/

Please take the time to visit that site and
let us know your comments on the
content, format, ease of access, etc.
Photos, stories and other images for our historical files.  It is not too late to send me your WWII
photos, stories and images to be included in our historical files.  Don't let those precious files
die with you or your veteran relative.

HAPPY EASTER TO YOU ALL.  FRED
