Hayes sent the following message:

"Nephew looking for information on his Uncle, Pfc
Bernard "Bunny" Hayes, E Company 255th
Infantry Regiment who was KIA 17 Feb 45.

I am trying to find information surrounding the life
and death of my uncle, Pfc Bernard M. Hayes of E
Company, 255th Infantry Regiment.  He was
Killed in Action on 17 Feb 45 in the Lorraine
sector near the village of Folpersviller, France.  If
you, or any of your compatriots knew my uncle
and his story, I would enjoy hearing about you and
my Uncle, a man I never had the privilege to meet.

Bernard Hayes was slender with dark hair and
glasses and came from Mount Vernon, New York.
His family nickname was "Bunny" and he may
have gone by that name while attending infantry
training at Camp Van Dorn, MS.  Before he
volunteered for combat duty, he served in the
mounted Military Police at Halloran General
Hospital, a military hospital in Staten Island, NY.

He was first reported as MIA on 17 Feb 45.  That
status was changed when he was reported as
Killed in Action as of 17 Feb 45.on 4 Mar 45.
Colonel Edward A. Chazal, C) 255th Inf Regt
notified my Mother of my Uncle's death  in a letter
written in April of 1945.
